Cement Totals—September 2011

Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico were about 7.0 million mt in September 2011, according to the USGS. This was 3.0 percent higher compared with shipments for September 2010. Total shipments for the year through September were approximately 53.8 million mt, slightly higher compared to the same period in 2010.

Cemex, Venezuela sign agreement nationalization compensation

Cemex reported recently that it has reached an agreement, through its Dutch subsidiaries, with the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and its public entity Corporación Socialista del Cemento, S.A., contemplating the payment to Cemex of US$600 million as compensation for the nationalization of Cemex Venezuela, S.A.C.A. Additionally, the agreement contemplates the cancellation of US$154 million of accounts payable by Cemex subsidiaries to Cemex Venezuela.

Hydraulic cement demand to reach 4.3 million mt worldwide in 2015

Global demand for hydraulic cement is forecast to rise 5.3 percent per year to 4.3 billion metric tons in 2015, valued at $335 billion, says World Cement, a new study from industry research firm The Freedonia Group.

Canadian cement consumption to decline

According to a recent report by PCA Market Intelligence, the typical economic growth supporters of employment and energy sector investment have not translated into Canadian cement demand this year, and a 0.8 percent decline in consumption is forecast for 2011, followed by a moderate rebound of a 1.2 percent in 2012.
