February Cement Shipments Jump 26 Percent

Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in February 2016 were about 6.0 million metric tons (Mt), up by 26 percent from the exceptionally low, weather-related, sales in February 2015, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. To some extent, it reflected catchup work after a lackluster January 2016.

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in February were Texas, California, Florida, Missouri and Alabama, in descending order. The leading cement consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Georgia and Louisiana, in descending order) received about 49 percent of the February shipments.

Clinker production totaled about 5.1 Mt in February 2016, up by 11.4 percent from the output in February 2015. The leading clinker-producing states in February were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Michigan, and these accounted for 56 percent of the total output for the month.

Masonry cement shipments of about 176,000 metric tons (t) in February 2016 were up by 28.5 percent from those of February 2015. The leading masonry cement-consuming states were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, Georgia and North Carolina; these received almost 59 percent of February’s shipments.
