Louisville to Monitor Air at Kosmos Cement Plant

Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District officials suspect the area near Cemex’s Kosmos Cement Plant in southwest Louisville, Ky., might violate the federal health standard for sulfur dioxide, reported The Courier-Journal.

Computer modeling of the plant’s emissions in 2014 showed there might be a violation of the federal sulfur dioxide standard near the plant, said air district Assistant Director Rachael Hamilton. The modeling showed a potential issue south of the plant. She said she’s not sure how large of an area may have elevated pollution readings.

Cemex has agreed to pay for the air monitor to be set up, and district officials will check it for the next three years to determine compliance, Hamilton said. The company said it agreed to participate as “part of a broader plan to check levels in the area.”

A public hearing pertaining to the air monitoring agreement will be held at 10 a.m. on April 19 at the air district office. Written comments may be submitted through April 18 to the air district, 701 W. Ormsby Ave., Suite 303, Louisville, KY 40203, or via email to [email protected].
