September Cement Shipments Jump 13%

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in September 2019 were 9.4 million metric tons (Mt), an increase of 13% from shipments in September 2018, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through September totaled 76.3 Mt, an increase of 3.6% from those for the same period in 2018. The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in September 2019 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Michigan, these states accounted for 41% of cement produced. 

The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Georgia) received 37% of September shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled 208,000 metric tons in September 2019, an increase of 3.5% from those in September 2018. Shipments for the year through September totaled 1.8 Mt, were about the same as those for the same period in 2018. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in September 2019 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia; these states received 56% of September shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled 6.9 Mt in September 2019, about the same as production in September 2018. Production for the year through September totaled 57.7 Mt, about the same as production for the same period in 2018. The leading clinker-producing states in September 2019 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama.
