March Cement Shipments Up 3.5 Percent

Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in March 2015 were about 6.3 million metric tons (Mt), up by 3.5 percent from the level in March 2014, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through March totaled 16.4 Mt, up by 5.7 percent from the same period in 2014.

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in March were California, Texas, Missouri, Florida and Alabama, in descending order. The leading consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Georgia and Arizona, in descending order) received about 45 percent of the March shipments.

Clinker production totaled 5.5 Mt in March 2015, down by 3.4 percent from the output in March 2014. Production for the year through March was 15.5 Mt, up by 8.2 percent from the same period in 2014. The leading clinker-producing states in March were California, Texas, Missouri, Florida and Alabama, in descending order.

Masonry cement shipments in March 2015 of about 188,000 metric tons (t) were up by 4.8 percent from those of March 2014. Shipments for the year through March totaled 476,000 t, up by 3.5 percent from the same period in 2014. The leading masonry cement-consuming states were, in descending order, Florida, California, Texas, North Carolina and Georgia, and these received about 59 percent of March’s shipments.

According to preliminary results for April 2015, total shipments for blended and portland cement were about 7.6 Mt. Total shipments of prepared masonry shipments in April were 197,928 t.
