Cementos Argos Cements Place in Dow Jones Sustainability Index

For the seventh consecutive year, Cementos Argos, part of Grupo Argos, was included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), which recognizes good practices in terms of economic, environmental and social sustainability of the companies registered in stock markets. The producer was also highlighted as the second most sustainable cement company in the world.

“At Cementos Argos we travel the path to sustainability convinced that the construction of housing and infrastructure dreams can be realized in harmony with the environment and in a team with customers and communities, to continue to promote the development of territories and access to opportunities for all,” commented Juan Esteban Calle, Argos president.

Around 3,500 companies in the world were studied according to their market capitalization. Of these, only 10% entered the Index, which is equivalent to around 318 companies that are considered the most sustainable on the planet. These companies belong to 58 industries in 27 countries.

Some of the actions that led Argos to be recognized are:

  • It has established itself as a strategic ally in sustainable construction projects such as the Facebook Data Center (United States) and the Institution Educational Gabriel García Márquez, the first LEED public school in Colombia.
  • It obtained revenues of more than $147 million for products with sustainability characteristics.
  • It continues its commitment to the development of practices that promote the circular economy through projects such as Greco, an Argos venture, which reused 100,000 tons of waste, the equivalent of 70,000 tons of mining.
  • It executes initiatives that contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions, which allowed 16% of the net specific emissions per ton of cementitious material to be reduced in the last year.
  • It implements different sustainable transport alternatives such as train, hybrid mixer trucks, gas trucks and electric trucks.
  • Water management projects allowed the producer to reduce the specific consumption of water in the cement business by 38% and recirculate more than the total amount of water it captures. In 2018, it reached 126% of recirculation.
