Cement Shipments Tumble in January

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in January 2024 were an estimated 5.89 million metric tons (Mt), a 14.3% decrease from revised shipments in January 2023, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Of total blended tonnage reported in January 2024, 2.7 Mt (98%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL); the leading destination for Type IL shipments by tonnage year-to-date was Texas. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in January 2024 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Florida, Missouri and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, Florida, California, Arizona and Georgia, in descending order) received 50.4% of January shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 165,000 metric tons in January, a 10.8% decrease from those revised in January 2023. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in January 2024 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee; these states received 67.9% of January shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 4.8 Mt in January, a 20.2% decrease from production the prior-year period. The leading clinker-producing states were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama.
